What is Cataract Refinement?
The Cataract Refinement Service is a community-based NHS service provided by specially trained optometrists working in local optical practices.
It is designed to assess patients who have been referred by their GP or optometrist following a routine eye test.
The purpose of the service is to make sure that:
- Your symptoms are caused by a cataract
- Cataract treatment is likely to improve your symptoms
- You understand what cataract surgery involves
- You feel ready and willing to proceed with surgery
During the assessment, the optometrist will explain the risks and benefits of cataract surgery and discuss your options for where you can have your treatment.
You will have the opportunity to ask any questions about cataracts or surgery.
This helps ensure that patients referred to hospital eye services are suitable and fully informed.
Who is this service for?
This service is for patients who:
- Have been told they may have a cataract
- Are experiencing problems with their vision
- Have been referred by a GP or optometrist for further assessment
What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye. It can cause:
- Blurred or misty vision
- Glare or sensitivity to light
- Difficulty driving, especially at night
- Colours appearing faded
Cataracts are very common and develop as part of the normal ageing process.
What happens during the appointment?
During your appointment, the optometrist will:
- Ask about your vision and how it affects your daily life
- Take a detailed medical and eye history
- Measure your vision
- Examine the front and back of your eyes
The assessment usually includes dilation of your pupils using eye drops. This allows a more detailed examination of your lens and the back of your eye (retina).
The optometrist will explain this before proceeding.
After dilation:
- Your vision may be blurred for a few hours
- You may be more sensitive to light
- You should not drive until your vision has returned to normal
It is recommended that you bring sunglasses with you to your appointment.
Choosing a cataract surgery provider
If cataract surgery is appropriate, you will be able to choose where you are referred for treatment.
During the cataract refinement appointment, the optometrist will:
- Discuss your options for cataract surgery providers
- Help you choose a provider based on your needs
- Ensure you are suitable for your chosen provider
What are the possible outcomes following your cataract refinement appointment?
After your assessment, one of the following may happen:
- No referral needed – you will be discharged with advice and guidance
- Referral for cataract surgery – if clinically appropriate and you wish to proceed
Is there a cost?
This service is NHS-funded, so there is no charge for the assessment.
